S. Louis et al., Nonlinear polarization evolution in type I and type II second-harmonic-generation crystals applied to the mode locking of a pulsed Nd : YAG laser, J OPT A-P A, 3(2), 2001, pp. 139-143
We report experimental results on the mode-locked operation of a flash-lamp
-pumped Nd:YAG laser using the recently developed technique based on no nl
inc ar polarization evolution in a second-harmonic-generation crystal. It i
s the first time such a technique has been applied to a pulsed laser. A pul
se train with duration close to 25 ps has been produced using two different
configurations. One was based on a phase-matched type II crystal (KTP); th
e other one used, for the first time, a mismatched type I crystal (KNbO3).
Mode-locking threshold and performances are compared between the two types
of crystal.
