An analytical method for the simultaneous in situ derivatization of organot
in and organolead compounds in water samples is described. Propylated deriv
atives of the analytes formed directly in the aqueous medium by reaction wi
th tetrapropylborate ions are extracted by hexane/pentane. The organic laye
r is dried and purified with sodium sulfate, concentrated by evaporation of
the solvent, and injected into a coupled gas chromatography-atomic absorpt
ion spectrometry system. The organotin and organolead compounds are determi
ned sequentially. The optimum parameters for the derivatization and extract
ion procedures of in situ butylation of organolead compounds developed earl
ier could be successfully applied to the in situ propylation.
