Titanium matrix composites reinforced with alumina short fiber were fabrica
ted by the hot-press method. Alter fiber (85 mass% gamma -alumina, 15 mass%
silica) was used in this study. A reaction layer was observed at the inter
lace between Alter fiber and the titanium matrix of the composite sintered
at 1023 K. Tensile test results indicated that the tensile strength was aff
ected by fiber volume fraction and interfacial reaction of the composite. T
ensile strength of the titanium composites containing 3 vol% Alter fiber fa
bricated by hot-press at 1023 K for 20 min was 30% higher than that of pure
titanium. However. the tensile strength of the composite did not increase
for 30 min sintering time and decreased for 50 min sintering time due to ex
cessive interfacial reaction.
