The effects of grain boundary carbides on the tensile and impact properties
of Inconel 600 at 25 and -196 degreesC were studied. Unlike the type 316 s
tainless steel which can be severely embrittled, grain boundary carbides ca
use only a significant loss in the reduction of area, but, otherwise, littl
e effect on other tensile properties. Deep grain boundary cracks are observ
ed on the fracture surfaces. Charpy V-notch impact specimens are not comple
tely fractured, even at -196 degreesC in samples with grain boundary carbid
es. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
