NEUES JAHRBUCH FUR GEOLOGIE UND PALAONTOLOGIE-ABHANDLUNGEN
An upper jaw fragment of a juvenil rhinocerotid is described from the Lower
Oligocene (Rupelian, MP22) Bohlen-Formation (open-cast mine Espenhain near
Leipzig). In comparison with other Paleogene genera the fossil cannot be i
ncluded in any known genus of the Rhinocerotoidea. Most closely related is
the primitiv rhinocerotid Ronzotherium, and therefore the taxonomic assignm
ent is aff. Ronzotherium sp. Due to the development of a strong antecrochet
and a deep posterior protocone furrow this taxon is more evolved than the
former. Together with the Eurasian Ronzotherium and the North American Amph
icaenopus aff. Ronzotherium sp. is interpreted as an early off-shoot of the
family Rhinocerotidae.
