The normal and charge-ordered phases in Bi2-2xCa1+2xMn2O7 With a hole-dopin
g level of x = 0.78 have been investigated by transmission electron microsc
opy. Bio(0.44)Ca(2.56)Mn(2)O(7), the first identified member of the 327-typ
e Bi-Ca-Mn-O family, was obtained under high oxygen pressure, and presents
an orthorhombic structure with Amam symmetry at room temperature. A structu
ral modulation is observed in this unusual layered manganite below 210 K, c
haracterized by the one-dimensional wave vector q = 0.22b* and a single tra
nsverse component. At low temperature the superspace group of the charge or
dered state is P-s-11(Amam).
