In an effort to resolve the theoretical difficulties in explaining the tota
l and partial decay rates and the ratio Gamma (n)/Gamma (p), a four-baryon
point LambdaN-->NN interaction is suggested as a new model for the short-ra
nge part of the nonmesonic weak decay of hypernuclei in addition to the tra
ditional one-pion-exchange model for the long-range part. It is shown that
with any value of the axial vector coupling constant g(A) in the range -0.1
less than or equal tog(A) less than or equal to0.3 for the isoscalar weak
current of nucleons, i.e., p(n)-->p(n) transitions, the partial and the tot
al nonmesonic decay rates Gamma (n), - Gamma (p), and Gamma (nm) = Gamma (p
) + Gamma (p) and the ratios T-n /T-p of He-4(Lambda), He-5(Lambda), and C-
12(Lambda) are excellently fitted in the experimental data.
