Evaporation residue (ER) cross sections for Se-82 + Ce-nat (Z(1)Z(2) = 1972
) were measured in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier and the fusion proba
bility was obtained with the aid of calculated survival probability. This f
usion probability was compared with that for Ge-76 + Nd-150 (Z(1)Z(2) = 192
0), which was determined with the same manner by using the data published b
y us. The former system represents fusion of two spherical nuclei, the latt
er fusion involving the prolately deformed target Nd-150. The collision of
Ge-76 with the side of Nd-150 is the most compact configuration at touching
. The system Se-82 + Ce-nat showed fusion hindrance in the form of extra-ex
tra-push energy of 27+/-5 MeV, whereas the system Ge-76 + Nd-150 does not s
how fusion hindrance at and above the Coulomb barrier energy, suggesting th
at the reaction starting from the compact touching point results in a highe
r fusion probability.
