Abstract
A local electric field may be enhanced in inhomogeneous metal films. This e
nhanced field can be used to enhance the absorption bands of adsorbed speci
es placed between metal islands. In this work, the range of a local enhance
d field and the position of a local enhanced site are explained. Infrared a
bsorption intensity for the C-O stretch mode of Fe(CO)(5) physisorbed at 90
K on 10 nm mass-thickness silver films, deposited in UHV onto germanium su
bstrates at room temperature, has been measured at normal incidence of radi
ation. On the basis of the surface morphology of the silver films, it was s
upposed that the local enhanced field was almost limited to channel between
islands in a physical mechanism.
