The effects of water base lubricants on wear of coated tools are examined b
y a crossed-cylinder wear test from environmental protection viewpoint. The
lubricating property of pure water is inadequate. However, the addition of
solid lubricant (melamine cyanuric acid adduct, MCA) to water, shows good
tribological performance. Such a mixture provides the advantage of separati
ng solid components from the water easily through filtration. The combined
use of water base lubricant with addition of 10 wt.% MCA with Ti-base coate
d tool shows good tribological performance when in contact with carbon stee
l. The wear rate of Ti-base coated tool in contact with copper is very high
. However, good performance results when the lubricant in this case is a co
mbination of water with MCA and CrN or DLC coating. (C) 2001 Elsevier Scien
