Current processes of transformation of modern societies are accompanied by
changes in gender relations, gender regimes and gender arrangements. The ar
ticle discusses three aspects of these changes: firstly, it focuses on both
, the modifications of the situation of East German women, more specificall
y of East German gender arrangements, and their ambivalent effects; secondl
y, it outlines those social developments, which lead to new social differen
tiations and inequalities, thereby asking, if and how they are linked to ge
nder differences or new configurations of gender arrangements; thirdly, it
discusses new conceptual challenges for women's and gender studies, which s
tem from these developments.
