In rats with diabetes induced by streptozotocin, the effect of stobadine wa
s studied on the extent of gastric damage, level of reduced glutathione and
on the contractility of gastric smooth muscle. The results indicate that c
hronic oral treatment with stobadine ill the highest daily dose used (63 mg
/kg) almost completely suppressed the formation of spontaneous gastric lesi
ons and increased the level of reduced glutathione in tile gastric mucosa.
The contractile responses to 5-HT, acetylcholine, and noradrenaline of gast
ric fundus circular smooth muscle suggest only marginal, not significant. a
lterations in the actions of the individual stimulants in both control and
diabetic rats.
