This tutorial examines how people of various cultures classify different co
lors as Deranging together under common color names. This is addressed by e
xamining Berlin and Kay's (1969) hierarchical classification scheme. Specia
l attention is paid to the additional fil e (derived) color terms (i.e., br
own, purple, pink, orange, and gray) that must be added to Herings' six pri
maries (i.e.,,white, black, red, green, yellow, blue) to constitute Berlin
and Kay's basic color terms. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
