Fossil bones of a new genus and species of rail (Aves: Rallidae) are d
escribed from one million year old shoreline deposits near Marton, Nor
th Island, New Zealand. Associated bones indicate the presence of a sp
ecifically indeterminate rail, an indeterminate avian species, and a m
oa (Aves: Dinomithiformes). These are the first described fossil terre
strial carinates from deposits older than 100,000 years in New Zealand
.
