The present study deals with transient torsional vibration problems. To sup
press the torsional vibrations during the starting period, a passive elemen
t is inserted in the field circuit of a salient pole synchronous motor driv
ing a high inertia load system. The optimal passive circuit parameters in t
he starting field circuit control schemes are determined by the proposed pa
rameter optimization algorithm with the unified quadratic vibration perform
ance indices. Computer simulation and Fast Fourier-Transform (FFT) analysis
show that the transient torsional vibrations can be considerably improved
when the field circuit is connected to the proposed starting control scheme
. The risk of premature component failure, due to the excess of the designe
d limit for transient torsional stresses can also be diminished.
