An iodized Yb-diphthalocyanine (YbPc2) film was produced by plasma treatmen
t after dipping in iodine saturated methanol solution. This film showed ele
ctrochromism (EC) similar to normal lanthanide-diphthalocyanine him. Howeve
r, this film consumes low faradaic current with high EC efficiency because
charge transfer between the phthalocyanine ring and iodine included in the
him causes the color change of YbPc2. We observed a vis-spectra dependence
on the anion species in the electrolyte. This result shows that color chang
e is not only caused by a charge transfer but also by a complex charged str
ucture formed as ions sink through the film. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
