R. Deml et Me. Epstein, Hydroquinone and other secondary compounds in hairs of fire caterpillars (Lepidoptera : Zygaenoidea : Megalopygidae), ENTOMOL GEN, 25(2), 2001, pp. 131-134
The larval hairs of a species of Megalopyginae were chemically analyzed by
combined gas chromatography / mass spectrometry. The hairs mainly contain h
ydroquinone besides nicotine, isopropyl myristate, and several trace compou
nds whereby hydroquinone and phenol probably accomplish disinfection from p
athogens of the animals.
