Automotive multiplexing allows sharing information among various intelligen
t modules inside an automotive electronic system. In order to achieve an op
timum functionality, the information should be exchanged among various elec
tronic modules in real time, Data-reduction techniques are used to send the
data over a transmission medium at a high speed. They can be employed in a
utomotive multiplexing systems to improve the information exchange rate amo
ng various intelligent modules. Some off-the-shelf data-reduction algorithm
s have been considered for automotive multiplexing, However, their applicat
ions have been limited to text data classes only. This paper introduces a d
ata-reduction algorithm that ran he applied to all data classes found in au
tomotive multiplexing, including body- and engine-related data. Detailed pe
rformance analysis of the algorithm is presented in this paper. Although th
is algorithm has been developed to fit in the automotive environment, it ca
n also be applied to nonautomotive applications in which extensive informat
ion exchange is performed among control modules via a multiplexing bus. The
proposed algorithm uses SAE; J1939 as a base protocol. However, it can be
used with other automotive multiplexing protocols without loss of generalit
y.
