The exposure of human lymphoid leukemia Molt 4B cells to sesaminol, a compo
nent of sesame oil led to both growth inhibition and the induction of apopt
osis. Morphological change showing apoptotic bodies was observed in the cel
ls treated with sesaminol. The fragmentation of DNA by sesaminol to oligonu
cleosomal-sized fragments that are characteristics of apoptosis was observe
d to be concentration- and time-dependent. These findings suggest that grow
th inhibition of Molt 4B cells by sesaminol results from the induction of a
poptosis in the cells.
