Abstract
We describe methods for annealing colloidal crystals using scanned optical tweezers. Tweezer-induced excitations drive a well-localized region of the colloidal lattice out of thermal equilibrium with its supporting fluid. Sub sequent plastic and elastic relaxation of defects yields large defect-free domains. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.
