Abstract
We have investigated quantum transport through long wires in which a s ection consists of one or several Al atoms in a chain. The self-consis tent ground state electronic potential is obtained using the first pri nciples ab initio method and the conductance is calculated by solving a three-dimensional quantum scattering problem. We have observed quant ized conductance when there are two or more Al atoms in the chain. Res istance is calculated for these wires at the Fermi level. (C) 1997 Ame rican Institute of Physics.
