Details of an image mode projection display are presented that utilize a tw
isted nematic display within the cavity of a laser. The reduction in the ou
tput efficiency of an image mode laser configuration duc to amplified spont
aneous emission is studied both theoretically and experimentally. It was fo
und that in order to maximize efficiency, cavity loss should be minimized w
hile maximizing the aspect ratio of the gain region and the optical pump ra
te.
