A theory of the reorientational phase transition in the biaxial surfac
e layer of a lyotropic liquid crystal is proposed. The transition is i
nduced by the calamitic-biaxial transformation in the bulk and is acco
mpanied with qualitative changes in the orientation and dynamic behavi
our of the gliding director which can be followed experimentally. (C)
