G. Pratico et al., EFFECTS OF ADMINISTRATION OF VITAMIN-D ON PATIENTS WITH SICKLE-CELL DISEASE, International journal of pediatric hematology/oncology, 4(2), 1997, pp. 127-130
Changes in bone metabolism in 8 sickle cell disease patients with prev
iously documented low serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were monitor
ed. Treatment with this metabolite of vitamin D caused a significant i
ncrease in serum levels of osteocalcin and a decrease in serum telopep
tide of type I collagen, demonstrating improvements in bone turnover a
nd mineralization.
