Abstract
Kenneth Brown's schematic overview posits that Morocco's rural population f orms only 40% of the whole population, and cannot easily be equated with a tribal population. In order to attempt to understand the meaning of the wor ds tribal and State' in pre-colonial, colonial and postcolonial Morocco, th e author makes a detailed inventory of social and political structures, and attempts to understand how power and authority have been legitimated.
