The dynamics of a two-layer bistable coupled map lattice (CML) is investiga
ted. A methodology for the construction of invariant domains in the phase s
pace is developed and applied to the study of pattern formation and inter-l
ayer synchronization. Sufficient conditions for global synchronization are
obtained. The phenomena of pattern interaction and replication of form is a
lso investigated. Finally, possible instabilities of the synchronization mo
de and on-off-diagonal attractors are analyzed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B
