The coherent and incoherent channels of the neutrinoless muon to elect
ron conversion in nuclei, mu(-)(A,Z)-->e(-)(A,Z), are studied through
out the periodic table. The relevant nuclear matrix elements are compu
ted by explicitly constructing all possible final nuclear states in th
e context of the quasiparticle random phase approximation. The obtaine
d results are discussed in view of the existing at PSI and TRIUMF expe
rimental data for Ti-48 and Pb-208 and compared with results obtained
by (i) shell model sum-rule techniques, (ii) nuclear matter mapped int
o nuclei via a local density approximation, and (iii) earlier similar
calculations.
