Abstract
BOD reduction of wastewater is a common problem in pulp and paper plants. T he conversion of an existing fermenter to a thermophillic, upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor to treat Tembec's acid condensate waste stream by h igh-rate anaerobic digestion is proposed. The project has a low capital cos t and short payback period and is expected to reduce Tembec's total BOD dis charge by 15%, and reduce the operating costs of their over-all wastewater treatment facility.
