The AIDS pandemic is still raging in year 2001 with 16,000 new cases of HIV
infection occurring each day. Patients with AIDS are at risk of acquiring
common and opportunistic infections that may involve the skin, subcutaneous
tissues, muscles, bones, and joints. In these patients, the infections ten
d to be more advanced at presentation, occur in unusual sites, are caused b
y a wider spectrum of pathogens, and tend to show an inadequate or delayed
response to therapy.
