We present data from censuses of recreational boating activity on Loch Lomo
nd, Scotland from 1989 to 1999 that demonstrate increases in craft numbers,
as well as changes in the type of recreational boating pursuits conducted
over this period. Using these data in a simple regression model that assume
s a continuation in the current rate of growth of boating activity, we pred
ict that craft activity will double in approximately eleven to thirteen yea
rs. We also show changing patterns of the type of recreational boating acti
vities being conducted on Loch Lomond, with the general trend being a switc
h from slow moving powered craft towards higher speed craft with more power
ful engines. Speed restriction bylaws introduced in February 1996 have had
no depressing effect on overall craft use but appear to have resulted in so
me change in craft activity within the loch and thus they may be a signific
ant tool in recreational craft management.
