Abstract
Nonprofit organizations have been increasingly scrutinized by their constit uencies, the public, and the media in regard to the level of compensation o f their chief executive officers (CEOs). This article explores the myths an d realities concerning "reasonable" CEO pay in the human services sub-set o f nonprofit organizations and compares the structures of, rationale for, an d actual levels of for-profit and nonprofit CEO compensation. Arguments for keeping nonprofit CEO pay low are challenged and suggestions are offered i n regard to defining consensual definitions of reasonable pay. Recommendati ons are made concerning public relations efforts to address public attitude s about CEO pay. (C) 2000 by the Haworth Press, Inc. All rights reserved.
