Nonprofit organizations have been increasingly scrutinized by their constit
uencies, the public, and the media in regard to the level of compensation o
f their chief executive officers (CEOs). This article explores the myths an
d realities concerning "reasonable" CEO pay in the human services sub-set o
f nonprofit organizations and compares the structures of, rationale for, an
d actual levels of for-profit and nonprofit CEO compensation. Arguments for
keeping nonprofit CEO pay low are challenged and suggestions are offered i
n regard to defining consensual definitions of reasonable pay. Recommendati
ons are made concerning public relations efforts to address public attitude
