The first total syntheses of a variety of useful bioactive compounds ha ve been accomplished by practically useful strategies. In addition, practicall y useful intermediates have been developed, analogues of natural products h ave been prepared, their structure-activity relationships studied, and the large-scale preparations of medically useful compounds established. The tar get molecules are antibiotics, antifungals, antitumor antibiotics, compound s related to beta -lactam antibiotics, enzyme inhibitors, central nervous s ystem-affecting products, non-steroidal progesterone receptor ligands, muss el-attachment inhibitors, and so on.
