A computer program IDOR2D GIS was developed to simulate the currents and po
llutant transport in lakes and coastal areas. The model is a closely-couple
d two-dimensional, hydrodynamic/pollutant transport geographic information
systems (GIS) model that operates within ARC-VIEW GIS. The use of this GIS
based interface module facilitates the improved communication of the basic
patterns and relationships associated with hydrodynamic/pollutant transport
simulation and the application of this information to water resources, pla
nning and management. Model functionality for data capture, data editing, p
re-processing, embedded artificial intelligence, and result interpretation
is described. The functionality of this model is illustrated through a case
study on Suda Bay located in Crete, Greece. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
