Two functionalized bipyrroles, 3,3',5,5'-tetraethoxycarbonyl-4,4'-dipropyl-
2,2'-bipyrrole 1 and 3,3',5,5'-tetraethoxycarbonyl-4,4'-diphenyl-2,2'-bipyr
role 2, are highly luminescent materials at room conditions; they show UV e
mission at lambda (max) = 416 (1) and 414 nm (2) with quantum yields close
to unity in the solid state; the molecular structure of 2 shows a coplanar
structure stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonds, and the molecules ar
e self-assembled along the crystallographic c axis by pi -stacking interact
ion to form a one-dimensional chain; electroluminescence of 1 is evaluated.
