U. Jarnberg et al., GAS-CHROMATOGRAPHIC RETENTION BEHAVIOR OF POLYCHLORINATED NAPHTHALENES ON NONPOLAR, POLARIZABLE, POLAR AND SMECTIC CAPILLARY COLUMNS, Journal of chromatography, 683(2), 1994, pp. 385-396
Six commercially available gas chromatography columns were investigate
d for performance in separating polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs). R
etention behaviour on the investigated phases is compared and retentio
n data for 40 congeners on a 5% phenyl-methylpolysiloxane column is re
ported. For all columns, except the octylmethylpolysiloxane and the sm
ectic, a relation between substitution pattern and retention was found
, where substitution in adjacent positions as well as a-substitution i
ncrease the retention time. A mathematical model based on these findin
gs was developed and used to predict the relative retention of all con
geners from di- up to octachloronaphthalene, on a 5% phenyl-methylpoly
siloxane column.
