J. Beltran et al., Ozonation kinetics of phenolic compounds present in table olive wastewaters: p-hydroxybenzoic acid, tyrosol and p-coumaric acid, CHEM ENG CO, 184, 2001, pp. 157-174
A kinetic study of the degradation by ozone of three phenolic compounds pre
sent in table olive wastewaters and other agroindustrial wastewaters has be
en performed by using a competition kinetic method. The selected phenolic c
ompounds were: p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid and tyrosol. The infl
uence of the operating variables (temperature and pH) is established and th
e stoichiometric ratios for the individual direct reactions between ozone a
nd each compound are determined. Once the reaction rate constants were eval
uated, they have been correlated as a function of temperature and pH into k
inetic expressions which are provided for every phenolic compound. The glob
al process occurs in the fast and pseudo first order kinetic regime of abso
rption, a condition required by the competition model to be used.
