The cis-trans isomerisation of maleylacetoacetate to fumarylacetoacetate oc
curs in the latter stage of the tyrosine and phenylalanine catabolic pathwa
y. Recently, it has been shown that this maleylacetoacetate isomerase activ
ity is performed by the zeta subclass of the glutathione transferase superf
amily, which is conserved in a range of species from mammals to plants. The
three-dimensional structure of a zeta class glutathione transferase from A
rabidopsis thaliana has been served by single isomorphous replacement with
anomalous scattering and refined to a final resolution of 1.8 Angstrom. (C)
