Abstract
As part of a carefully designed study of Swedish non-smoking and smoking lu ng cancer patients and matched population controls, we have studied the int eraction of GSTT1 genotype with smoking on lung cancer risk. The GSTT1 null genotype appeared to be protective against lung cancer among never-smokers (OR = 0.2; 95% CI = 0.05-0.6), but conferred a 5-fold increased risk of lu ng cancer among smokers with higher (> 23) packyears (PY) (OR = 4.8; 95% CI = 1.0-22.5). We conclude that the GSTT1 null genotype may be a susceptibil ity factor for lung cancer at higher accumulated smoking dose. (C) 2001 Els evier Science Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
