Abstract
Molecular phylogenetic analysis of a blue filamentous community from an alk aline thermal spring (79-83 degreesC) in Iceland revealed that the blue fil aments were affiliated with the Aquificales. Tho dominant sequence type, pI ce1, was most closely related to a sequence (SRI-48) found in a white filam entous community from a separate Icelandic thermal spring and the pink fila ments (EM17) from Yellowstone National Park. Fluorescent in situ hybridizat ion with clone-specific oligonucleotide probes showed that the sample analy zed was essentially a monoculture of a single phylotype.
