Abstract
Certain fundamental properties of small, clear wood specimens of seven spec ies of eastern red oaks were determined at the green and at 12 percent mois ture content: tension parallel to grain, static bending that includes pure modulus of elasticity, modulus of rigidity, and toughness. The following oa k species were investigated: southern red, northern red, black, shumard, wi llow, laurel, and water. The values reported here are only indicative and d o not represent the true property averages for the species because of the l imited number of trees and specimens tested. The reported values can be use ful if wood of these species is used for structural purposes.
