We investigate solid hydrogen as a nonlinear optical medium. We carry out s
timulated Raman scattering (SRS) experiments using a large Raman coherence
prepared with two single frequency pulsed lasers. We show that multiorder S
RS generation proceeds collinearly to the pump beam axis without stringent
restriction of phase matching. We show also that the SRS generation dominan
tly occurs for negative two-photon detuning for which the Raman coherence c
an follow the antiphased state coherence.
