Significant motion of a particle suspended in a fluid in a magnetic field r
equires steep gradients and hence short migration distances. Recognizing th
is constraint a magnetic particle separator was designed to classify partic
les on the basis of magnetophoretic mobility. Multiple short migration path
s were achieved by using a multistage extractor, which draws particles out
of a feed cuvette using an increasing magnetic driving force at each stage.
