Abstract
The Environmental and Water Resources Institute of ASCE has established a t ask committee to study the problem of sediment movements in urban drainage systems and to make recommendations for new research and for design and mod eling improvements. This paper is an initial part of this effort; it addres ses a review of related publications within the past 7 years. Sediments can cause sewer blockage, surcharge, early overflows, and large pollutant disc harges; their removal is costly. The review of the recent literature shows that much progress on this problem has been made in Europe and that fundame ntal and applied research and development in the United States is urgently needed.
