Abstract
Peripheral benzodiazepine receptors (PBRs) are implicated in many cellular events. Initially discovered in peripheral tissues, they have also been loc alized in glial cells in the central nervous system (CNS). Binding studies using synthetic or endogenous ligands have led to die tissular and molecula r characterisation of the receptors, and of their associated-proteins. PBRs are involved in mitochondrial physiology, steroid biosynthesis, cellular p roliferation, and differentiation, apoptosis, and have putative functions i n the immune response.
