Abstract
Advective mass, heat, and salt exchange between the Arctic and the North At lantic is calculated from the balanced fields of currents, temperature and salinity obtained from a general ocean circulation model using a climatic d ata base on temperature and salinity. The calculations were performed for t hree sections, Scandinavia-Spitsbergen (16 degrees E), Spitsbergen-Greenlan d (78 degrees N), and Newfoundland-Greenland (53 degrees W). Climatic norms of advective mass, heat, and salt exchange are obtained. Seasonal climatic variability of the norms is described. A considerable inflow of the Atlant ic water into the East Greenland Current is shown to form thermohaline char acteristics of the deep branch of the oceanic conveyor.
