Supplements of any kind are always controversial in exclusively breastfed i
nfants. Of the fat- and water-soluble vitamins, deficiencies of vitamins D
and K have been well described in this population. These are the only two v
itamins commonly given to breastfed infants. Vitamin K is given at the time
of birth, and vitamin D is generally recommended for all dark-skinned infa
nts or those not receiving regular sunshine exposure.
