Kangaroo Mother Care, which began as a desperate measure to reduce morbidit
y and mortality among hospitalized low-birth weight infants in developing c
ountries, has been shown to be safe, affordable and effective. Its benefits
to the mother, her low-birth weight infant, health services, and the commu
nity at large have been demonstrated in diverse settings around the world.
The full potential of Kangaroo Mother Care in the promotion of breastfeedin
g in low-birth weight infants is yet to be realized.
