Abstract
More than half the world's countries, including all of Western Europe, have abolished capital punishment in law or in practice. Of all western industr ialized nations, only the United States employs capital punishment. Accordi ng to Amnesty International, worldwide, the only two countries "believed to have executed a person during 1999 for a crime committed before he was 18" were Iran and the United States.
