R. Vacher et al., MEAN FREE-PATH OF HIGH-FREQUENCY ACOUSTIC EXCITATIONS IN GLASSES WITHAPPLICATION TO VITREOUS SILICA, Physical review. B, Condensed matter, 56(2), 1997, pp. 481-484
Direct spectroscopic information on the frequency and temperature depe
ndences of acoustic-phonon damping in vitreous silica is reconsidered.
It points to the essential role played by Rayleigh scattering of the
phonons, in quantitative agreement with thermal properties at low temp
eratures. A picture is proposed that consistently unifies thermal prop
erties with all the available spectroscopic results.
