Jl. Miller et al., Faculty and students' views of teaching effectiveness in the United States, China, and South Africa, TEACH PSYCH, 28(2), 2001, pp. 138-142
Instructors and students from universities in the United Stales, South Afri
ca, and China completed a survey concerning effective teaching. We conducte
d a 3 (university location) x 3 (respondent type) MANOVA with 3 scab develo
ped from a factor analysis. Consistent with past studies (e.g., Divoky & Ro
thermel, 1988), a high degree of similarity in views of teaching effectiven
ess was found between instructors and students on items concerning preparat
ion, evaluation, presentation, and opportunities for student inquiry, sugge
sting that instructors and students use the same criteria for rating teachi
ng effectiveness. However, differences among respondents from the 3 countri
es were found, suggesting the need for cross-cultural research in the defin
ition and evaluation of effective teaching.
